Interview Q&A
How long have you been in business?
Bruce Wilson founded Formations Design Group in 1989, so we have been in business for 20 years
What is your primary product or service?
Formations Design Group is a full service website development company, providing website design & development, content management, dynamic applications, SEO, e-commerce, database development, web hosting, and photography. We also provide comprehensive print media services, including annual rreports, brochures, packaging, identity packages, logos, catalogs, direct mail, posters & banners and ads.
Our web and print design services start at the initial concept stage and we work with you through the entire project until we deliver the completed product to you.
How did you first become interested in your line of business? (if owner) - What is your background? (If owner or store manager)
In 1989, Bruce worked for Dick Hannah Subaru and saw a need for in-house graphic design and took it upon himself to provide those services for his co-workers. He self-taught himself the ins and outs of the design industry (earning the nickname Yoda along the way). Eventually he left his job at Dick Hannah to open Formations Design Group.
Karen Laksamana started working for Formations in 1997 while earning her Bachelor's Degree in Graphic Design at Portland State University. She stayed on after graduation, and became business partners with Bruce in January, 2006.
How do you differentiate yourself from other businesses in your category and area?
When you work with us, we like to get to know you. You don't have to work with a nameless, faceless design firm somewhere across the country. We invite you to come right down to our office and talk to our team in person. That's right— we do our work right here in-house. Not only do we have the technical know-how and years of experience in graphic design and website development, we have college-trained graphic designers, an illustrator, and developers on-staff. We also pride ourselves on our responsiveness to our clients’ needs.
How many locations do you have and do you have plans to expand?
We have one location in downtown Vancouver on Officers Row. We like our team to work together and we don't have plans for expansion at this time.
Provide detailed directions to your location
We are located in the heart of downtown Vancouver, on Officers Row. From I-5, take the Mill Plain Exit and head East. Take a right on Ft. Vancouver Way and head south. At the traffic circle, exit to the west, towards downtown. As you exit the circle, there will be an immediate right, down into the West section of Officers Row. Our office is in the back side of the house in the far NW corner. 656 Officers Row.
What type of payments do you accept?
We accept cash, check, and credit via Paypal.
Which areas do you service?
The nature of our business allows us to provide service to local clients, as well as to those across the country.
Who owns your company or runs daily operations?
Bruce Wilson and Karen Laksamana are co-owners of Formations Design Group and both run the daily operations with the help of their dedicated team.
What are your hours of operation?
Our work hours are very flexible to accommodate our clients on the East Coast as well as locally and we are capable of working at all hours from our homes. But someone is generally available in our office as early as 8:30am and as late as 6:30pm on weekdays.
